Overview
Foothills Rural Planning Organization (RPO) provides transportation planning and mapping/GIS support to McDowell, Polk and Rutherford counties. Established Feb. 19, 2002, the RPO is one of 20 such organizations in North Carolina that was formed after the state recognized the need for more coordinated transportation planning in areas outside of metropolitan regions.
Foothills RPO is made up of of RPO staff and two Boards: the Transportation Coordinating Committee (TCC), which is composed of staff from member governments and agencies, and the Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC), which is composed of local elected and appointed officials.
The goals and duties of Foothills RPO include:
- Developing comprehensive transportation plans in coordination with NCDOT
- Providing a forum for public participation in the planning process
- Developing and prioritizing projects for the State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP)
- Providing transportation data to local governments and other interested parties
